The Toronto Zoo Run has been on my to do list for a couple years (even though I just started running a couple months ago). The Saturday of the race we woke up to rain. I do not love running enough to voluntarily run in the rain. I don’t like to be wet or cold. Had the entry fee not been so steep, we probably would have bailed. I am so glad we didn’t. I loved this race and I actually really enjoyed running in the rain.
Turns out race photos are not flattering. Sadly, this was the best one.
Once the race started, I couldn’t even feel the rain. Jeff ran with me because I wanted to take it easy. I was worried I would push myself too hard and not have enough juice to finish the race. (This is the first time I’ve run further than 7K). Unfortunately Jeff’s calf cramped up to the point where he stopped and declared, “I’m done! I can’t even walk. Leave me. Go on with out me.” Although it pained me to walk mid race, I really wanted to finish with him. Luckily I got him walking (conveniently right past the monkeys). We didn’t walk for very long and Jeff eventually decided he could run it off.
Official race time was: 58:39 which is a new PR! Technically my first PR, regardless, I now have a time to beat. I think I could push myself and run it in under 55. Something to work towards.
I would sign up for this race again and hope for better weather. I also really loved this distance. I’ll have to keep my eye open for interesting 10K’s around the city for 2014. – It’s October, and freezing (I’m being dramatic). My “race season” has officially closed.
